Intimacy has no greater goal than to know and to be known. Sometimes, this happens when we sit side by side, not saying anything at all.

Indeed it is not necessary to say anything sometimes. However many feel compelled to keep the conversation going in a new relationship as they find the silence awkward. This is because in silence one feels the overwhelming presence of the other.
